Understanding the Job
For the purpose of this example we will use a
Security Systems company as our model. If installing a small
residential system or a large enterprise class you need to
understand the basic factors of the job you are executing. The first
and foremost is the time line & completion dates, job components,
and the type of billing.
Timeline & Completion Dates
The timeline on any job really begins when the
purchase order is received. There are usually dates for completion
of particular components of a job. On larger jobs the timeline is
crucial, if you don’t complete the section of work in the specific
timeline you affect other contractors who are working behind you.
For our Security Systems company example, you plan to complete a
pre-wire of a large concrete building over the period of a week. The
electricians are running conduit piping for the job. Even though you
are scheduled to begin, the electricians are behind and haven’t
finished their install yet. This now affects your start time and
pushes out your completion date. If you have a different job
scheduled to start the week after you could now be facing a labor
shortage and can expect to pay overtime rates to get the job done.
In a competitive market overtime can be the difference between loss
or profit.
